Frequently Asked Questions
- My roof leaks. Do I need to replace it?
Not necessarily, leaks can be caused by many different things. It could be a maintenance problem like caulking at flashings or pipes. You may just be missing some shingles, but most roof systems are designed to last about twenty years.
- Can I put new shingles over the existing roof?
Yes, in certain cases a "roof-over" is possible. A professional roofer should inspect the current conditions of your existing roof to determine if this is feasable.
- What is "drip edge"?
It is an L-shaped strip of metal installed along the roof edge to allow water to run off to rip clear of the roof deck and eaves.
- Siding Versus Painting:
One of the most common questions asked when it comes to siding is whether or not paint is 1/4 a better choice. In the short term painting is definitely less expensive than installing new siding on your home, but after a few years this changes. Whereas paint usually needs re-painting after two-three years, replacement siding is more of a long-term investment
- What are the advantages of capping the rakes and fascia boards?
This allows a maintenance free exterior. It eliminates the need to paint any exposed wood that deteriorate from the elements of weather. Capping comes in a verity of colors.
- What are "soffits"?
This is part of the roof that extends out from the main roof at the gutters edge. This area should be vented to allow air flow into the attic for better ventilation or and help regulate temperature.
- What are the different types of gutters?
The most common is aluminum 5" & 6" gutter. Copper and galvanized are also available.
- What are gutter covers?
Gutter covers/Gutter Guard protects the gutter and downspout from falling leaves and other tree debris. This is important because gutters become clogged and allow water to over flow causing dirt erosion and wet basements. Or the gutter becomes to full and begin to pull away from the fascia board.
- Why does ice form in my gutters?
This is called an "ice dam". Melting snow often refreezes where the surface is colder. This blocks proper drainage into the gutter and water backs up under the shingles and seeps into the exterior walls. The build up of ice and snow could destroy your gutter. It is also important to keep gutter cleared of debris to help eliminate damming.
